I have never played UO. Would it be unwise to start now?

I have never played UO. I would have been a little young for its glory days. I've played many MMOs but never UO. It always looked incredible but I felt a little intimated. The feeling of intimidation is even greater now but I still just want to get a taste of this game that I never had the pleasure of experiencing in its prime.

For someone who has never played, is it worth it to even bother being a newb or is there simply too much I've missed/don't know/can't learn? Would UOF be the right place to start? Somewhere else?

Thanks.

It is never unwise to start playing UO. It's a great game :D.

It may be tough to get established as a complete newb, but there is a great system in place to help new players on this server, namely the companions. Once you start out you'll be marked as a young player for a certain amount of time. During this time you cannot be attacked or get stolen from and the companions will be able to teleport to you. The companions are players dedicated to help the newbs, you can ask them anything you want. If you are unsure about what to do, ask around in Britain or ask for help in the new player question section on the forums.

UOF is the most populated server out there and it is definately the best place for anyone to get a taste of the greatest era of UO.

Good luck!

UO is one of those games where being behind doesn't really matter too much. It's also a game with a lot to learn. To your question, it really depends on your own mindset. Can you deal with open pvp?

Uo in this form is more like a virtual world than a game. If you can self motivate its one of the most rewarding mmorpg experiences I've ever had. In a lot of ways it can be far less violent than other games. You can be a tailor or smith or alchemist etc without ever killing.

Thank you both for your responses. I'm very eager to start.

This is what I find the most exciting!

Inkraven hit me up once you get a taste of things, I can hook you up with a decent silver weapon so you can slay the newbie dungeon and get some startup cash.

There's a ton of fun stuff to do in UO no matter what your experience or goals.

get a pack of cleenex and start playing... Most of the people here 've been playing for 15 years + and are still learning. I sometimes feel like theres never enough to know about this game.

You wont regret it. Uo is a game/culture/life in and of itself. Unlike most games you may get killed here and there, but there is just as much chance of that pk resurrecting you, giving back your stuff, and often times helping you out. Its never too late to start UO. Just be ready though...once you start you will never forget it. Just ask any of the folks on here that played just about everything out there yet here they are..back where we belong...Britania for life.

Thank you guys! I didn't expect such quick responses. It's great to hear all of this. I understand, of course, that this game can be brutal but I'm really excited I still have the opportunity to experience some of its former glory.

And it's especially nice to see an active and enthusiastic community for a 15 year old game. I think that says quite a bit about this game.

Now if only I could get it running...

Werid - that looks like the UO auto patch screen which shouldn't be popping up if you're going on UO:F. Did you get it worked out yet?

As many have already said, the community of uo players that still exists some 16 years after the games initial release is a testament to what an awesome game it is... And this server ROCKS! :)

I definitely have .net. I think I have Razer...how can I check? Also, what file am I supposed to run when starting the game?

Oh....derp. I got it running. I was not launching the correct file from the download. Thus, the adventure begins.

Edit: Connection lost on character creation. Now I can't connect. mfw.

I believe there is a video tutorial that is listed on the main uo:f site for setting up the client/razor.

Once you get the game up and running I would recommend reading this starter guide esp the section on making a starting character (it suggests begining with a fencer which I tend to agree is a great setup to start with to make gold). The guide is located here:

Also, try to spend as much time as possible killing things in the new player dungeon as your skills will raise faster and there is no threat of getting killed by other players.

Dat old patch screen..............bring back smashing memories. Started playing this game when I was like 10 years old, and there's a reason I keep coming back to this game over the years again and again. You shall soon discover it.
