What template for a mage should be? for just PVM.

A bard are usually the best for PVM but take a look at the guy who posted above us.

Med dexer is probably best for first character as they are cheap and easy to make. You can then change him to prov dexer when youve made some cash. Skills should be:

weapon (maybe not archery for first char as it uses arrows which cost money.)
tactics
anatomy
healing
magery
meditation
resist

Train these skills to 50 from npc trainers then get to killing some ettins and ogres.
Dont worry about getting your mage and resist or even healing trained until you have the gold. For a pvm dexer those skills arent that important. Once your combat skills are trained, if youre going for a pvm char you can lower 2 of healing, meditation or resist for music and prov to make a prov dexer. Prov dexer is a very effective pvm char.

Magery is good cause it gets you places quicker.

you will want magery on almost every character you have. to recall,gate,heal,cure etc....

^ this. I have gm (or close to) magery on every single character I have except for my crafter, who has 50 for recalling.
