Stealing Help!

Hi Everyone

I'm a long term UO vet - played on release for ten odd years, had a break and played WoW, came back to the main shards for another (very, very quiet) six months but was disappointed at how casual it had all become (death needs to have a meaning and I need to be scared in a dungeon). Found this server a few days ago and I'm in HEAVEN.

I always loved the original UO set and while I wish this server had a bit more land a couple more of the GUI advances, it's wonderful and I'm having a great time.

I'm also not hamstrung with the moral beliefs of my early teenage years - so this time round I"m having a ball with lvl 80 odd hiding. I'm killing everything that even looks like they are AFK, picking fights with those I think I can take (much to learn) and corpse robbing blues. SO MUCH FUN.

That said - I'm really struggling with how to get stealing up to 60 where I can join the thieves guild and REALLY be a nusance. Everything I've read involves a whole lot of time and a pack horse - but unless I've become terminally stupid that doesn't seem to work on this server.

Can anyone help me with a meaningful way of raising stealing to 60? I'm trying NPC's but it seems that the sun will supernova before I get there at this rate.

Look forward to playing with you all :)

Edit: I NPC trained to 50 - so its just 50 - 60 I need help with.

Good man.

You can put bottles in a bag on the ground and target steal the bottles. Just make your macro pick up the bag and then put it down again, so it doesn't decay.

Thanks mate, I didn't think of that. I'll have a shot at a (attended!) macro. Appreciate the help!

I think he needed to clarify that you need to put a bag with bottles in another bag, and then steal the "bottle bag" from the main container. The bottles provide the weight (1 bottles = 1 stone), plus 1 stone from the bag itself (pouches are 2 stones, I believe, so keep that in mind). So you can put down a backpack, let's say, and put a BAG with bottles in it equal to your current Stealing (-1 for the bag's inherent weight). This is so you can add bottles to increase your training of Stealing as it goes up.

So 60 Stealing would be a bag of 5 bottles (5 stones from the bottles + 1 from the bag = 6 stones, which is the weight at which you can steal with 60+). Why not just steal the bottles, you ask? It's easier to steal from a pile, and you will often steal LESS than your max if it means you can succeed. That's why you're likely to steal 78 Ash instead of 90 Ash at GM Stealing because you might have failed otherwise. Trying to constantly steal your max limit will train it more successfully.

PS: Thieves can suck it.

I promise I'll donate my first theft to charity.

Thanks - I already understood that process from earlier reading but appreciate your clear and concise summary.

The community here seems to be helpful and genuinely interested in making the shard continue. Please to be a part of it.

I'm sure that targeting the stack of bottles will attempt to steal as many bottles as you can (i.e. your appropriate skill level amount). Or is this incorrect? My memory suggests this is what I did, and I GMed Stealing in two nights.

Never mind, I went back and bothered to read, not just skim. Listen to the Dewd. I don't know why a pirate is hating on thieves, though.

Interesting! Wondered how those thieves were getting it done around here.
