IRC, gotta have mIRC. Then whatever voice chat your friends use, but start with IRC for the communal aspect of it.

Skype only sucks if your internet bandwidth sucks. For all others - it's most likely the best solution.

Skype does suck compared to teamspeak or ventrilo, but its free, so you really cant complain.

Skype sucks because it is not meant for gaming so the format is all wrong. Skype has a convoluted and clunky interface and the audio quality can be pretty bad at times with echo and whatnot.
Sending messages to offline users is nice though, I'll give you that. That's about the only reason I ever use it.

Pardon my ignorance but, I haven't done much internet chatting. Wouldn't it have to be the same program that the people you want to talk are using? Or will it communicate through each of the IRCs?

IRC is text based chat only. Skype/Mumble/Teamspeak are all voip applications to have voice calls (used a lot for PvP).

IRC is good for bullshitting, other than that I have vent, Skype, TS, mumble and raidcall installed. Seems like everyone has their own preferred program but fuck if I can tell much difference.
