probably looted the wrong corpse

maybe it also opened a blue corpse on the same tile as the grey corpse and you got them mixed up?

Nope, I Ctrl + Shift , then clicked on the grey corpse name. As soon as I pulled an item from the corpse box, I was dead. I double checked and I did not have open new corpses within 2 tiles on either (been there, learned to turn it off).

Ctrl+Shift will show all corpses and ground items as grey. This is because Ctrl+Shift will show the drag bars (the title bars that appear when you press Ctrl+Shift) as categorized items... corpses and items you can drag will show as grey, for example. The Ctrl+Shift method isn't accurate for finding out the criminal status of a corpse. Rather, set a macro for AllNames. You can do this in the Options window in your Paperdoll-- just assign a macro key and when selecting an action for the macro, make it show "AllNames".

When you press this macro you will see the names of all players, animals, monsters and corpses on the screen with proper criminal status (blue, grey, red, green (guildie), orange (alliance), etc.).

Every time you open a blue corpse it puts a system message on the bottom left of your screen saying you will go criminal if you loot. So just look for that message when you double click on corpse.
