Build a small fence adjacent to your house and use it to till the land and plant a farm.
This would be great to make use of areas that are otherwise blocked by trees. You could fence out a small non-rectangular area. It would be level with the terrain, unlike a housing plot.
If this isn't possible now, it sounds like the new UOF launcher patches would certainly make it possible.
