Plots into farms

Recently there was an interesting chat at IRC about vegetables in UO, which brought me an idea about how to get a somewhat proper farming system here.

About 3 years ago I played on a Finnish shard called Dysentria that had a farming system, where you were able to buy "farming plots" and place farms around the map. You were able to grow vegetables, which were utilized to make a special dye color for example for clothes. You were able to grow reagents as well.

Not sure, if I remember the system right, but it had farming plots, which is the main idea here. If you have an empty plot, you could use it as a farm and grow reagents.

Any thoughts? See picture below of coconut tree farm.

No idea why, but I like this idea also. Even old and decaying thieves need a past time..

Sure looks nicer than all the empty plots out there!

The farms should have public access - harvest and upkeep by whomever happens to stop by. Nothing is private other than the ownership of the plot.

The plants can be random, or maybe based on the surrounding flora.

The owner of the plot clicks the "make this a farm" and the plants start to grow. No secure storage, etc.

what about automatically growing random plants if a plot isn't built upon after say 1 week?

If the owner actually confirms a farm on his plot, perhaps more options and plant types become available. Owning a plot though and converting to a private farm should yield some significant benefits so it can compete with lack of storage and plot cost value of selling the home.

Perhaps you could get a farm hand for every 8x8 tile you own. The farm hand can sell your produce. Maybe faction owned cities can buy produce directly from confirmed farm plots. Some sort of income generation to compensate.
