Old Great Lakes Memories and Players on OSI

So I started playing Ultima Online on OSI Great Lakes early 1998 and like many others was instantly hooked. Times were simpler then, with little to no assistant programs (UOAssist did come not too long after, which of course everyone had).

I remember a lot from that time... PvP, RPing, and just playing the game as it was.

It was a time of noobs and those just having fun with everything they found...

Skills were extremely hard to gain and being 7x was a huge undertaking - and rarely seen. We all "thought" we knew the best way to train things:

...and then some guys would come along and show us how it is really done.

You know, everyone tried to make a tamer back then too:

When you were able to tame that very first Dragon, it was time to remember:

Let us not forget our Ultima heritage - there was lots and lots of role playing:

Dupre and his group of heroic defenders (ignore the free dial-up -- don't hate, we all used it)

Seers would give out quests in person...

Ye Ole Tavern (I think it was Golden Dragon Tavern)

And of course there was organized PvP...

Trammel did end up becoming a thing. We all quickly placed houses in choice locations, but soon found that with so much land, comes much loneliness and boredom...

Many of us ended up getting in trouble because of this boredom...

I don't remember too many folk from back then, but I do remember those that I spent the most time with:

Ace (Onslaught) (Which I remember the guild we were in)
Elric (yes, D-I Elric)
Azure Drake (aka Azreal --> seen above in jail)
Most of Order of the Golden Dragon (OGD)

Good times...

What do you remember about Great lakes back then? Let's see YOUR screen shots!

Thanks for a little trek down memory lane. I was Lake Superior back in those start up days.
I wish they would bring that cloak graphics back that your char Dupre is wearing.
I remember the mountains outside Minoc and the hours on hours of mining to build my wealth.
And I shiver at the pic of Ice Isle. OMG the mindless hours spent there taming! I lucked out on my tamer, Maligant. He actually got that last .1 to GM off a nightmare.

Those were the days boy, those were the days!
Back then... #thestrugglesreal

I actually made my tamer when nightmares came. I had to have one. I finally got high enough and tamed one on the first attempt.. luckily it was the day one of the people controlling the spawn had decided to let another one spawn and I just haoppened to be in the right place at the right time.
Sonoma though. Ahhh those days. Days when it was really an adventure, it wasn,'t all already known.

Remember the server down battles? The servers would go down for maintenance one day a week (monday? tuesday? can't remember) and there would be a two hour timeframe just before it went down where anything goes, you could strut your best gear in battle unafraid of ddying and being looted because once it came back up, that never happened.

Oh hell yeah, those mass battles in Brit GY were so fun

I hit LS in 99!

And yea @crazy-horse
I do remember how people controlled the Mare spawing. I cant remember when they fixed that but do remember them fixing it. If memory serves me right as long as the mare didnt leave the particular server another one wouldn't spawn.

My tamer was Maligant. Was pretty well known.

I remember being at Skara bank and seeing someone with the "Lord" title. Which back then was something to see! Then Trammel came and everyone had it.....lol

And damn! The money we made make in those days selling on eBay!

Yeah, used to stay up late just to hit up server wars.

I played GL around 98 myself but I was a newb no-namer. My chars were Foxx and spRinKleZ (what the blind guy from The Simpsons renamed Santa's Little Helper to).

I remember Sabbath CD and thinking all those guys in CD were cool as fuck because they all had CD in their name. I remember Scooby Doo I think was his name, one of the top guys on the bounty board, if not the top guy. And one day I actually ran into him and he was pking some other people and no one could kill him and I was scared as fuck like "holy shit this guy's a beast he's gonna kill me"

I never trained enough to 7x my chars, it always seemed impossible. I would just get GM archery and enough resist so that I could pk people and I would go on PK sprees seeing how many people I could kill before I finally died and got statted. Then I would just make a new char rather than wait for the counts to wear off, lol.

I also remember people exploiting a bug with blade spirits to gain resist very quickly in shame by casting from on top of a building. I don't know exactly how it worked and I never did it cause I was afraid of getting banned.

Good times though... fond memories of being a total newbie.
