I'm not sure I just tamed it, It has horse stats. Maybe someone else knows?

yea they are re-skinned horses. Both male/female characters can ride the kirin. I think that applies to the unicorn too.

confirmed, i can ride a unicorn on my male char. and i dont think they take any taming as i tamed on first try.
