Does mining affect the efficiency of smelting?

Does mining skill (at least partially) determine the number of ingots you get from smelting metal products or does it only determine the kinds of metal that you can smelt (e.g. you can't smelt valorite weapons at 50 mining but you can at some higher skill level)?

There is a chance at double iron when smelting and your skill level will prevent you from failing when smelting.

Is that just for smelting ore, or is it for smelting down iron products (katanas, etc.)

Melting ore: More skill is better! (up to 120)
Melting items: More skill is better! (up to 100, anything beyond doesn't count)
