So, my UO history knowledge probably isn't up to the best of standards, so I don't know if this has ever been done before. But how about this:
Giving mobs that drop normal spell scrolls a small chance to drop a uniquely colored spell scroll, which can then be added to any normally crafted, normal plainly colored, empty spell book. And when that spell book has all 64 scrolls, it turns into the color of the scrolls added to it.
And as an added bonus, since we now have slayer spellbooks, maybe there could be some other incentive to make them like giving a small random chance at developing a slayer property permanently (not like the ones with charges).
They would be unblessed after they take on the new hue, properties, etc, until a bless deed is applied to them.

Obviously the hues aforementioned would need to be WAY more awesome than the ones shown here, but it gets the point across.
