Can you steal from other players? From their homes?

Hey, I'm new to UO and UO Forever, and when I was picking out where to play (OSI, UOSA, UO Forever, etc) I read that in Felucca on OSI there was such a thing as player theft.

Still trying to figure out all the things a player can or cannot do on UO Forever, and I was wondering if taking items from players was possible.

I know players drop loot when they die but can you steal from them without killing them?

Also, can you break into their homes and steal?

If these are possible, are there safeguards against these?

You can steal any item(s) from a players backpacks that is not blessed. Blessed items would really only be spellbooks/runebooks/dono items.

See above. You need the stealing skill and be a member of the thief guild to steal from players.

You can get into players houses and steal any item which isn't in a locked down or secure state. Note: Most items in houses are in one of those states and not stealable, but you may find some stuff eventually.

Stay away from West Britain Bank, its littered with thieves. Use secure containers in houses to prevent people from stealing items.

@Salsa pretty much mentioned everything. Just a few notes to expand on what he said since you are new to UO and may get confused about things like "thieves guild", etc.

1. Anything that is blessed cannot be stolen directly (i.e. you can't target a runebook and steal it). However, if you have these items inside of a bag or pouch, the actual bag or pouch itself CAN be stolen and the thief gets everything inside. It's for this reason you should never keep valuables inside of bags or pouches-- consider them never safe there!

2. The Thieves Guild isn't a player guild like you're probably used to seeing, It's basically just an NPC-run group that you can "join" when your thief reaches the proper skill threshold. Joining the Thieves Guild allows your thief to steal from any character anywhere in the world at any time. Without being in the Thieves Gulid, you can not steal from other blue (non-criminal) players. While in the Thieves Guild, you can. There are a lot of other things to know, like "permagray", but you can read up on that since it's very confusing to explain.

3. The most important thing to know here on UOF is to NOT do ANY trade of moderate-to-high value with another player anywhere but the Docks. The only exception is if you're buying or selling a house-- in that case you have to be present at the physical house with the buyer/seller. There are many tricks players will use to lure you into a trade at some town bank, only to scam you out of the item(s) using tricks with Stealing, etc.. the Docks are safe. Stealing and attacking are disabled there, so you can trade anything with 0% risk. You can get here by going through the black gate on the west side of Britain Bank.
