A Guide to 5x dueling combos and tactics [Part 2]

Grandmaster
I am going to write this guide as if you have followed my first guide

The reason im using this guide next is i believe 5x to be the basis of all mage combat thus if you can 5x then you can 7x as its just bonuses.

1. additional macros/hotkeys required

Mouse wheel up = attack last
Mouse wheel down = macro for spellbook [self disturb]
step 1. place a spellbook in your hand
step 2. press record
step 3. lift your spellbook but do not put it down anywhere then simply place it back into your hands
step 4. stop recording
step 5. tick pass onto UO
step 6. press save

Mouse 3 = last target this is used to target your smaller spells your larger spells it is not required if you are following my macros.

2. self disturbing this technique is used to cancel out your own spell it is an advanced strategy used for tricking your opponent or canceling a cast out to get a lesser delay in recasting the spell.

spend some time cycling through your spells and mouse wheeling back to get a grasp of how to use this.

An example of how this is used would be

your opponent loads explosion they then go to poison [the poison is unsuccessful]
you have started loading cure but your opponent sees this and casts an energy bolt
now your reaction should be to use your mouse wheel back[self disturb macro] to cancel your cure and instead start casting a mini heal.
this will save you a few seconds that are vital and will allow you to heal high damage dumps.

now on the aggressive side of things

you load explosion and then start casting poison
your opponent predicts the poison or reacts well to seeing you start casting and casts cure
at this point your poison would be rendered useless but you can make use of it to fake them out
use your [self disturb] while casting poison and immediately start casting another explosion
your opponents reaction will be to cancel there precast cure and to start mini healing when they see damage
this will then allow you to get another poison off while they are healing
you now have successfully done between 30/60 damage to your opponent and they are poisoned at this point you have a good chance of killing them.

one final example and the most useful is at the start of a poison tick your opponent has preloaded a harm to disturb you
if you cast cure then [self disturb] they will release there harm onto your [faked cure]
you will then be able to cast another cure faster than your opponent can disturb you in most cases.

3. never take unnecessary damage

harm is a great example of this NEVER stand still when someone is keeping you disturbed with harm as it does its largest damage based on the distance between you and your opponent the best way to avoid the damage is to cure[self disturb] while casting your cure that you are going to disturb walk in the direction with the most space when you disturb your cast it will cause you to gain 2 tiles on your opponent immediately cast your second cure and you should be able to get it off with minimum damage.

weaken should become your best friend if your low on health cast it on your enemy to disturb the spell that would otherwise finish you off your other option is to wrestle your opponent by [mouse wheel up = attack last] as this is a 50% chance of hitting your target dont be to reliant on it use it as a last resort or early in the enemys combo while healing.

it is worth mentioning that you cannot wrestle while casting you must time them between and plan ahead.

predict your enemys cast and decide if you can get a greater heal off in time or you are going to mini heal always choose the guaranteed option.

4. never waste mana and meditate opportunistically

1. know your chances of a kill be able to read your mana verus your enemys health

so if your at 40 mana and your opponent has 60 health you do not have much chance of killing them although its possible for example if you have them poisoned and you have harm up [spell advantage] you may want to continue your combo and use small spells to finish them off. but if they have spell advantage cure up then its pointless to continue you time would be better served meding up.

2. meditate between casts

self explanatory and i dont understand why no one does it always med where available it doesnt give you much but you get an extra 1 mana atleast everytime you do it so why not? it gives you advantage constantly

3. keeping the dump preserving mana

so if you have tried to dump your opponent and your poison has failed or a low damage explosion your enemy will now try to go aggressive simply fake aggressive combos like casting explo and [self disturbing it] preventing them from dumping and when your back to 100 mana start dumping again.
DO NOT DO THIS WHEN YOUR OBVIOUSLY LOW ON MANA as they will know roughly what you will have left.

4. holding poison when someone is low on health

This situation often happens and people seem to struggle with it if your opponent is holding a cure and you have poison up NEVER cancel your poison out the longer they hold the cure the longer you are passively gaining mana when your offensive the longer he holds that cure up the worse his chances are.

in turn when your defending you should never hold a cure any longer than 3 seconds instead try mini healing [disturb self] cure they will drop the poison when you go to cast mini heal and you will beat there next spell with your cure.
5 BASIC COMBOS.

The problem alot of people have when they start to learn to 5x is trying to run before they can walk learn the basics first then build upon it.
Fast casting is the most important thing in dueling not your ability to disturb but knowing what recovery time you need between casts.

so using my fast casting macroing system makes this much better than using qued targets or mouse wheel targeting as your using less keys and casting more effectively by loading your next spell with your target at the same time.

practice these combos first and nail them down to perfection before you try anything more advanced.

combo 1 .explo [delay here for half a second once the cursor is up]
poison [delay for half a second again]
energy bolt [hold down your energy bolt key to target it]

combo 2.explo [delay here for half a second once the cursor is up]
energy bolt [hold down your energy bolt key to target it]

combo 3.energy bolt [delay here for half a second once the cursor is up]
energy bolt [hold down your energy bolt key to target it]

combo 4.energy bolt [delay here for half a second once cursor is up]
poison [delay here for half a second once cursor is up
energy bolt [hold down your energy bolt key to target it]

combo 5. explo [delay here for half a second once the cursor is up]
explo [delay here for half a second once the cursor is up]
poison [delay for half a second again]
energy bolt [hold down your energy bolt key to target it]

depending on enemys stats you can replace the energy bolt with mind blast

when you start with these basic combos ignore anyone saying you suck just stick at it because your learning alot of skills at the same time and perfecting them rather than there sub par harm spam that might beat a beginner.
this is going to train you to be among the best not average.

6. Perfect fast casted intermediate dumps

DO NOT MOVE ONTO THIS PART UNTILL YOU HAVE MASTERED 5.

ok so you have mastered fast casting now you need to learn how to slip in disturbing spells adding damage and preventing healing.

so following the first section combos your going to add in the disturbs for example.

explo
poison
[use harm here your going to use it to disturb the cure]
then cast your energy bolt
[you can then apply more of your fast casting skills here by doing poison energy bolt]

another great combo is

explo
explo
poison
magic arrow
energy bolt
energy bolt
if this is fast casted correctly its alot of damage over very little time

at this point your going to be able to kill the majority of people remember its very important to always keep your enemy poisoned to prevent healing.

6. Keeping the tick

this is about as advanced as mage pvp goes and its all about practice prediction and reaction time.
dont worry about how long the poison timer is it really isnt important you need to know how many spells spacing inbetween the tick you need.

stripping it to its bare basics the ideal disturb is level 1 if you cast any debuff spell twice inbetween a tick it will bring you to the next tick magic arrow is exactly the same but you need to be very fast to release your first one and load another as there is delayed damage on it.

when casting explo poison harm your explo acts as your first small spell to disturb inbetween the tick so in this case you only need 1 harm for the following disturb if you were to continue on an ideal disturb path your combo would look like this

explo
poison
harm
[poison tick]
harm
weaken
[poison tick]
magic arrow
magic arrow
[poison tick]
weaken
weaken
[poison tick]
harm because of the pacing of spells this disturb wouldnt be any earlier but would feel that way.
[poison tick]
harm
weaken
DEATH

at any point in this combo you can remove any weaken for a wrestling disturb instead
but if someone spammed cure this would disturb them

obviously theres counter tactics to this delaying casts of cure disturbing your harms ect ect

you need to learn the pacing of spells as well as the poison tick and spend some time getting beat.

7. STATS

i personally run 83 str / 42 dex / 100 int
allows just enough resistance to mind blast
doesn't sacrifice to much hp
and gives you 100 int meditation bonus.
