Every floor and every corner will be judged. Make the most of your space! This includes your cellar!

Tips for Success

Have a Theme or Story: Whether it’s a haunted pirate cove, a twisted pumpkin patch, or a horror scene from pop culture, a clear theme or story makes your entry memorable. This also gives judges insight to your design choices. It can change a judges thoughts from "why would they put that here?!" to "Oh, that's why, then that's pretty cool."

Balance is Key: More is not always better. If your house looks like a box of Halloween deco exploded inside, your score will suffer. Likewise, empty or ignored areas will drag you down. You should strive to have a thoughtfully decorated area, that looks neither too busy or empty.

Attention to Detail: Sometimes the smallest touches are the coolest. Clever use of ordinary items in unexpected ways can really impress the judges.

A Note on Screenshots: We are not judging based on screenshots. The real judging will only take place in person when staff visits your house for inspection. Screenshots are mainly for other players to enjoy and to help staff confirm we are at the correct location. If you’re getting dangerously close to the deadline and holding off submission because you want to get that perfect screenshot, don’t risk missing the deadline! It’s always better to get your submission in on time, even if the screenshots aren’t quite perfect.

Don't be so hasty to clean up after Halloween: Please also keep your houses fully decorated until winners are announced, as judges will be visiting them after the submission deadline.

Church of the Burning Son
Chapter 2: The Cemetery of the Forsaken

Last year, the Church of the Burning Son attempted the unthinkable: bringing Lucifer into the mortal world. Their plan depended on Winifred, a devoted cult member tasked with creating the perfect vessel for Lucifer. But Winifred failed. After countless unsuccessful experiments, the cult leader lost faith in her abilities. Winifred was removed from her position and replaced by Malachi, the Grave Shepherd.

Malachi is a ruthless practitioner who believes the answer the cult seeks lies not with the living, but with the dead. With this new belief, the cult abandoned its former sanctuary and relocated to an old, forgotten cemetery. Now surrounded by graves and decaying remains, its members can continue their unholy work undisturbed. Once again, they set fire to the trees, signaling that the Church of the Burning Son has arrived.

Two ancient crypts stand within the cemetery. One has been desecrated and transformed into a chamber for dark rituals, where cult members attempt to communicate with spirits of the underworld. The other contains the remains of a small child. Strangely, Malachi has forbidden anyone from disturbing this grave. No one knows why he has ordered it left untouched. Perhaps he wishes to leave the child's spirit in peace. The only other building on the grounds is the old groundskeeper's shed. Once used to store tools, it now serves a more sinister purpose. Inside stands an altar where those seeking to join the cult must make a blood sacrifice. Only after completing the ritual are they welcomed into the cult and shown its underground lair.

An old grandfather clock stands against the northern wall. What appears to be an ordinary timepiece conceals the entrance to the cult's underground lair. Deep beneath the cemetery lies Malachi's laboratory. Here, he works among preserved body parts, mysterious fluids, forbidden books, blacksmithing equipment, and even rudimentary living quarters. In this hidden space, Malachi can continue the experiments that Winifred could never perfect. But Malachi has discovered something his predecessor overlooked. Creating a vessel strong enough to contain Lucifer may require more than simply assembling the perfect body. For reasons known only to Malachi, his attention has now turned toward the small, untouched crypt above.

For this year's Halloween contest I was inspired by the awesome Fall Dungeon that we all know and love. I tried to design the house from the ground up with the architecture of some of the various Fall Dungeon locations, which was a huge undertaking just by itself. Overall, I went with a evil wizard school type of vibe.

Outside we have our fountains of bones surrounded by bodies, evil trees, bats and more. Once inside the dungeon style entrance, we have a couple different rooms. An alchemy lab, a necromantic summoning chamber, an altar to a dark god, and the glorious throne of the headmaster.

On the second floor, we see the results of what happens when you just blindly drink the coolaid. Students have to do their due diligence!

The third floor features one of the scariest things of all... a library. Of course, knowledge is power, and that power sometimes comes at a cost. We also have a prison running adjacent to it. Knowledge can free you from the prison of your own mind, after all.

There is also a full cellar on this 30x30. If you're afraid of spiders, perhaps avoid it. I wanted this area to be *THICK* with spiders and adjacent decor. To me, for it to really capture the fear some have of spiders, it needed to be really dense and very full, so I went for it but also tried to give the cellar some rooms and areas, which is always a challenge in a giant 30x30 box with no walls.

As always, turn off circle of transparency and have fun checking it out. It is fully open and no doors are locked, etc. Coordinates are 2332, 3765.

Cords:2024,814 (edge of Compassion Desert by the guard hut).
Idea: After the invasions a group of farmers set up salvaged goods and produce to make a fall maze for people to relax, a multi-level maze with prizes hidden within..

Farmer Frank set down the last tub of pumpkins for the season. With a happy sigh he looked over at the maze he and his farmhands had created. Burl rest at the end of the maze with some chickens that survived the spider attack in Trinsic not too long ago. Burl threw some bread crumbs down to the flightless birds as they explored the wheat shafts near him. Burl rested himself after a long day of hauling around crates to hide in the makeshift maze. He had spent most of his free time setting up trick-or-treat bags the last two weeks after the invasions of monsters, spiders, and the damned. He had a half hopeful grin that this maze would be fun for those who survived the attacks upon the cities as of late, half worried that people may be too jumpy still and nervous.

Farmer Frank looked around the area for a small plume of smoke. Near the center of the maze resided a small enchanted campfire. It was to let people know they where nearly to the end where fresh candied apples, and cider awaited! Resting here would also benefit those who had become lost, as they could simply "Leave house" so to say and appear at the start of the maze. Or if anyone became stuck for that matter.

Burl waved as Frank walked by from the group of sunflowers near him.
"You have the last pouch set?" Frank asked as Burl leaned against the table of refreshments.
"Aye," Burl smiled, a crooked happy grin. "I set up some shards, fragments, some of tho' Buc' treasures you found." Frank nodded contently. "I even set up a few 'worthless' bags, and some bags for the kids full of sweets."
"Thanks Burl." Frank chuckled, recalling the explosion earlier from Burl trapping the wrong pouch. "Did you hide them really well?"
Burl Nodded and snickered. "Aye. I tried to blend them in this area. Over there. An' my favorite here." he pointed in the directions of several containers ones barely seen in the waving wheat and sunflowers. "Anyone should be able to open them, but they gotta be warned they're trapped." Burl reached over and pulled a tough candied apple off a tray, caramel fighting to stay behind. "There's not much else left to do this season." He smiled and took a bite into the treat.
"Thanks for all the hard work." Frank smiled, as he himself grabbed a sticky candy apple. "I best double check the standees are firmly in the ground. I reccon with how thing's have been, unless there's an invasion out here yonder we could stay here till a few weeks before winter comes." Burl nodded, mouth to sticky to really respond with more than a grunt. "I say we should take what doesn't sell and give it out at Cove. I hear that they're setting up in case of an orc winter attack." Frank took a bite of his apple as Burl gave a hard grunt, followed by a rough painful swallow and cough.
"I can't wait to get some pumpkins to carve for pie." Burl smacked his lips. " Annie makes them so good even Lord British would want one!" Burl exclaimed as Frank chuckled. It had been a long time since he had seen some of his fellow farmers so happy since the monsters swarmed the cities earlier this month. While some parts of the maze were made difficult, he hoped that it wasn't /to/ easy to beat.

With the sounds of people approaching Frank and Burl scarfed down their candied apples, narrowly avoiding choking. Frank bid Burl farewell, and went to the shortcut to the entrance to the maze. A little kid with maybe a sibling or a young friend, and their parents approached. Frank gave one last cough to clear his throat of caramel, and warmly approached them, hoping they would have fun.
